There’s something liberating about an empty space. It offers a beginning, and in so many ways, when it’s something you’re creating—a blank page on which you’re beginning a story, a blank canvas on which you’re beginning a painting, a freshly-painted wall on which you can hang anything—it’s your chance for a new beginning. It’s a starting over, an opportunity for you to express yourself anew. In a life that’s often heavy with responsibility and routine, such a moment to start fresh is a gift.
For my husband and I, a home renovation gives us that feeling. We love the excitement of taking apart someone else’s aesthetic to put it back together with our own tastes and needs in mind. If you’re new here, I wrote about our new house set in the countryside of rural Pennsylvania in this post and this one. I’m providing updates for paid subscribers as the renovation moves along. This is the blank slate edition, where I get to show you what we’ve taken down, and what we’re about to add onto.
It’s all a lot of work, and it’s also very exciting.
